On August 25, 2001, at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts, 21,078 fans watched twenty-two women take the pitch for something larger than a championship. It was the culmination of a decade of momentum; a direct lineage running from the iconic 1999 World Cup victory to the creation of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world’s first fully professional women’s soccer league where players were paid as elite athletes.
In that inaugural title match, the San Jose CyberRays faced the Atlanta Beat in a 120-minute, 3–3 war of attrition that pushed past exhaustion and into a dramatic penalty shootout.
When the final spot-kick hit the back of the net, San Jose claimed the inaugural Founders Cup by beating the Atlanta Beat 4-2.
The CyberRays were engineered with an explosive combination of domestic grit and international brilliance. Coached by Ian Sawyers, the squad was built around an incredible midfield core:
- Brandi Chastain: Fresh off her historic 1999 World Cup-winning goal, Chastain anchored the franchise with unrelenting defensive instincts, tactical versatility, and iconic star power.
- Sissi (Sisleide do Amor Lima): The Brazilian maestro brought unmatchable flair, dead-ball precision, and vision that unlocked modern defenses. Her vision and set-piece mastery drove the attack, as she co-led the entire league with 10 assists in 2001.
- Tisha Venturini: A cornerstone of the U.S. National Team’s golden generation, Venturini brought championship composure and box-to-box dominance to the center of the pitch.
- LaKeysia Beene: The brick wall between the posts, earning WUSA Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2001 after allowing just 21 goals all season.
Together, this roster transformed San Jose’s Spartan Stadium into an impenetrable fortress, developing a high-tempo, attacking style of play that defined Northern California athletics at the turn of the millennium.
There's a stat about the 2001 season that still doesn't have company: San Jose is the only city in American professional soccer history to hold the men's and women's championship in the same year. The Earthquakes won MLS Cup. The CyberRays won the Founders Cup.
In 2024, Bay Area soccer got a second chance. Bay FC kicked off at PayPal Park (20 min from the original team's turf) with Brandi Chastain back on hand as a founding ambassador.
Celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, the CyberRays remain the first team to win it.
